Process comprises absorbing the X-rays in a quantity of liq. enclosed between cathode and anode electrodes. The liq. consists of a suspension or dispersion in a dielectric liq. carrier of pigment particles of which >=1 is a heavy metal component. The absorption of radiation causes the formation of charged particles in the liq. which are then drawn towards the electrodes by the field between them. A registration collector sheet is mounted close to one of the electrodes so that a pattern of charged particles, corresp. to the original X-ray image, is formed on the registration sheet. The registration medium consists e.g. of a dielectric liq. aliphatic, aromatic or halogenated hydrocarbon carrier such as isopentane, cyclohexane, isodecane or isododecane. The dispersed particles may be e.g. of a photoconductive pigment with an atomic number >=17, such as 22TiO2, 30ZnO, 34Se or 48CdS; heavy metals such as Fe, Bi, rare earths, etc.; dark coloured metal oxides, sulphides or halides such as MnO2, Mn2O3, Mn3O4, PbO, PbO2, CuO, CuBr2, PbS, FeO, Fe2O3, or FeS; dark coloured inorganic pigments such as Fe4 Fe(CN)6 3, BaMNO4 + BaSO4, CoO.Al2 O3 or Fe Fe(CN)6 . Process allows simple single stage electrostatic registration of an X-ray image, e.g. of an article which has been non-destructively tested by X-ray penetration.
|
