The contact pins of the anodes of electrolytic furnaces are replaced by an apparatus comprising a gantry movable along a row of furnaces and transversely between rows, the gantry supporting a carriage which is movable thereon in directions parallel and transverse to a furnace to dispose pin withdrawing and replacing equipment carried thereby opposite the pins of a furnace. Cages in the legs or side of the gantry carry new pins and receive used ones. The pin replacement operations may be programme controlled. |
