A process for the production of wrapped yarn comprises continuously passing at least three strands through a whirling body of fluid, each strand being fed at a rate at least twice as fast as the next fastest strand, and wrapping at least two of said strands around at least one of said strands in a multiplicity of wrappings which include both left-and right-hand wraps, the net wrap being zero. The wrapping strands 22, 24 may form crunodal loops 19 on the core strand 20. At least one of the strands is preferably a continuous filament strand. In the embodiment shown in Figure 2, the wrap strand 22 is at least twice as long as the core strand 20, and the wrap strand 24 is at least twice as long as the wrap strand 22. Apparatus for making wrapped yarn from a plurality of textile strands comprises a generally cylindrical chamber 30, a conicallytapered plug 40 projecting into and concentric with the chamber 30, the plug containing a pair of strand inlet passages 44, 46 extending longitudinally the length of the plug 40, means for creating a whirling body of fluid in said chamber including a tangential opening 36 into said chamber and means applying a pressurised fluid to the opening, means for feeding a wrapping strand into said chamber including a tangential opening 34 in the side wall of the chamber, and means removing the wrapped yarn from the chamber. The tangential openings 36 and 34 are preferably spaced by 140‹ around the chamber. |
