1,215,519. Projectile fuzes. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES S.A. 4 June, 1968 [9 June, 1967], No. 26431/68. Heading F3A. A percussion fuze for a spinning projectile comprises a striker 2, a relay charge 12 mounted in a centrifugal rotor 11 which is movable about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the fuze to align the charge 12 with the striker and an explosive device 9, a centrifugal locking device 14 for the striker, and a retractable blocking member 17 which maintains the rotor in its safety position, the blocking member being permitted to retract from its active position, in which it is retained by the centrifugal locking device 14, only when the centrifugal locking device is no longer operative. The blocking member 17 is in the form of a capsule or a pin (17, Fig. 5, not shown) and is retractable automatically under the action of centrifugal force or axial acceleration, or is retracted by springs or ramps responsive to centrifugal force or axial acceleration, or by the pushing action of the rotor as it rotates. The centrifugal locking device 14 is in the form of a split annular bolt surrounded by a split ring 16 and a spiral element 15 which progressively unwinds under the action of centrigufal force. Upon firing a projectile fitted with the fuze, the striker is moved forwards by balls 4 which climb along a surface 5 under the action of centrifugal force, whilst the centrifugal locking elements and blocking device operate to free the rotor. If the rate of spin of the projectile drops sufficiently before impact of the projectile with a target, the force of a spring 6 overcomes the centrifugal force acting on the balls 4 and causes self-destruction of the projectile. |
