The grinding and dressing unit is for a profile form tool in a machine tool, the grinding unit being numerically controlled. The profile of the tool is projected onto a graduated scale (8) having a reference point (R) scribed on it, via a lamp (4), lens (5) and mirrors (6, 7). The position of the grinding wheel relative to the tool (14), clamped in a toolpost (12) for setting the profile, is controlled by handwheels (2, 3) operated manually. The reference point on the scale can be provided by a template of know dimensions clamped into the tool holder to be adjacent the tip being ground. The image of the template is then projected onto the scale next to that of the tool profile.
