<p>1453331 Pliers for closing clips on packages H NIEDECKER 4 Jan 1974 [10 Jan 1973 (2) 11 April 1973] 00435/74 Heading B4W Pliers for applying a U-shaped clip 9, described and claimed in Specification 1,453,332 (see Division E2) to a gathered portion 12 of a packaging material and for closing the clip therearound comprises pivoted arms 1, 2 a housing member 5 integral with one of the arms 1, a plate 6 pivotally mounted on the housing member 5 and having a recess 8 for holding a clip 9 with its open end towards the gathered material 12 when the latter is disposed adjacent a die 19 mounted on the housing member, and a drive connection between the arm 2 and the plate 6 for pivotal movement thereof whereby the clip is made to move in an arcuate path 18 firstly to embrace the gathered portion 12 and then to be closed by the action of the die 19 and plate about the said portion 12. A pivoted spring-loaded lever 13 assists in the correct placing of the gathered material adjacent the die 19. A magazine for supplying the clips extends laterally from the housing member (Fig. 3, not shown). As shown the drive connection includes an extension of the arm 2 and a cam groove 29 in the plate 6 but in an alternative embodiment (Figs. 1-3, not shown) the connection involves a knee type lever. In another embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) a tapered opening in the housing member provides a lead-in for the gathered material to a space adjacent the die.</p> |
