1509049 Charging batteries WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO Ltd 14 July 1976 [20 Aug 1975] 34550/75 Heading H2H A method of charging a battery comprises the steps of passing a charging current through the battery, making a first measurement of the battery voltage during an interruption of the charging current, making a second measurement of the battery voltage during recommencement of charging, repeating the first and second measurements, comparing the last taken first and second measurements with the previous first and second measurements to determine respective increments thereof and repeating the steps until both respective increments are below respective predetermined values. The battery which may be a lead-acid traction battery, receives a preliminary charge for a seven minute period before the charging current is interrupted for a period of from five to seven seconds. At a predetermined time, for example four seconds after the start of the interruption the battery voltage is sampled and stored. At the end of the interruption, the charging current is restored for a period of from five to seven minutes and at a predetermined time in this period the battery voltage is again sampled and stored. The process of interrupting and restoring the charging current is then repeated, the battery voltage being sampled and stored during each interruption and charge period. A voltage comparator determines the successive voltage movements for the interruption and charge periods. An increment comparator determines when the voltage increments during the charge interruption periods have fallen below a predetermined value, thereby indicating the gassing point of the battery. The battery charging current is then reduced to a lower level to prevent damage to the battery and the charge interruption periods followed by charging periods continue until the voltage increments during the charging periods fall below a predetermined value. The battery is now fully charged and the charging current is terminated. |
