The control mechanism is for a shaping machine or profile shaping or trueing arrangement of a grinding wheel, with data storage for electrical signal values. The stored values represent the co-ordinates and the angular position of a sensing element (8) along the edge of a template. The control elements (9, 10) are supplied from the storage and control the position of a shaping tool. A template reading machine generates the electrical signals which correspond to the co-ordinates and the angular position of the sensing element (8). The control elements consist of stepping motors (9, 10) which operate by a pantograph or other reducing mechanism.
