A piston type internal combustion engine is arranged to use, in a time dependent process, the shock compression and expansion waves generated by the combustion of the fuel to pump highly energized compressed air from a reservoir chamber adjacent the combustion chamber and in communication with the latter through a restricted passageway into the combustion zone during the entire combustion process. The combustion chamber, reservoir chamber and passageway are configured to promote controlled pumping of air from the reservoir into the combustion chamber throughout combustion due to the interaction of the compression and expansion waves. The air in the reservoir is fuel-free and is preferably placed in the reservoir during an aspirated intake event by controlling the timing of fuel flow during intake and the mixture of the charge at the intake port. The preferred embodiment provides the reservoir chamber in the piston near its working face and the passageway is an annular gap between a radial lip of an annular member supported above the piston and the cylinder wall. |
