1482013 Polymerizing unsaturated polyesters with UV light; opaque polymer products KRONOS TITAN GmbH 7 Oct 1974 [8 Oct 1973] 43412/74 Heading C3P Hard, opaque polyester products are produced by irradiating with UV light a mixture of at least one unsaturated polyester, styrene, at least one methyl ester of a monocarboxylic acid having an aliphatic carbon chain containing at least 8 carbon atoms, and at least one UV senstive polymerization initiator. (The methyl ester is stated to provide the products with opacity and brightness similar to TiO 2 pigments but, unlike the latter, does not strongly absorb UV radiation). Methyl stearate is an example of a suitable methyl ester and azodiisobutyronitrile is a preferred initiator. Applications include coatings and moulded articles. |
