Plasticising unit in polymer processing machine has a polymer supply reservoir and a conveying screw enclosed in a heated barrel. In the zone where the moulding cpd. is charged, from the reservoir, to the screw, a means is arranged adapted to generate reduced pressure within the barrel. This facilitates shifting the moulding cpd. from the reservoir into the screw channel. Esp. used for processing of (particulate) moulding cpds. having a relatively low apparent density so that they are less amenable to gravity-fed conveying from reservoir to screw. Any tendency to clog the inlet tothe barrel is minimised. The reduced pressure in the barrel also promotes removal of volatiles from the cpd.
