Wedges operated by pneumatic hammer - for simple assembly or removal of the base on a steel-making converter

Device for assembling or removing the base on a converter, where the bottom end of the converter wall is fitted with a thrust ring; the converter base is pushed against the thrust ring by a circular row of rockers. Each rocker is actuated by a wedge; and each end of the wedge can be driven by a compressed air hammer to clamp or release the base. Each end of the wedge is pref. provided with a hole employed to locate the end of a hand lever on a pivot bolt; and the hand lever acts as a guide for the hammer. In an alternative embodiment, the hammer is located on a slide which aligns the working end of the hammer with the wedge. Process avoids the arduous manual work presently required to assemble or remove converter bases.
