The wide range gear box for the tractor has the gear ratios in set values to enable different combinations to be used to generate the different ratios. The overall number of gears is reduced, without affecting the number of gear ratios. The gears for the lower speeds are stronger and larger to take the larger torques, as for ploughing, while the higher speed ratios are slimmer for a compact layout. The two sets of gears can be used together for the higher gears, but only the stronger gears for the lower gears.
