Embossing unit with embossing head has a stepwise advanced embossing strip in which the symbols are formed. The embossing symbols are in mirror-image form and are stamped into the surface of the strip (16) to create legible symbols. The embossed strip is used as a pattern for a tracer printer (22) whose tracer point (26) follows the contours of the embossed depressions in the strip. The embossing head with mirror-image symbol stamp can be interchanged with a normal embossing head and the embossing strip is reversible in its guide. The original embossing disc incorporating the raised symbols can be interchanged with other discs carrying different symbols.
