A secondary aromatic arrive is prepd. by reacting a sodium salt of an aromatic sulphoacid (I) with an alkali metal deriv. of a primary aromatic amine (II) at 190-400 degrees C. The product is then isolated. (II) is pref. sodium anilide or a Na cpd. of p-toluidine. Reaction is pref. conducted in an organic solvent, which is pref. the primary aromatic amine in excess. The wt. ratio of (I), (II) and solvent is pref. 1:1-5:1-20 respectively. The products are antioxidants and stabilising agents for polymers. The starting materials are easily obtd. and the process causes little atmospheric pollution. In an example, N-phenyl-2-naphthylamine was prepd. in 99wt. % yield from the Na salt of 2-naphthalene sulphonic acid, Na anilide and aniline.
