The label application mechanism is for use in machines labelling bottles, glasses etc, having a number of parallel rows of brushes extending at right angles into the path of the items to be labelled, and accommodated in a body mounted on a stationary support. Each row (10) has a separate strip-shaped body (9), movably mounted on the stationary support (6) by one or more elastic components (7). Thus as it rides over the items (3) to be labelled as they pass along the track (4) it is thrust out of the way against the action of the elastic component. The clearance between the parallel brush bodies can be such that they do not touch each other as they ride over the bottles.
