The mechanism grips paper in a printing machine, the paper being secured to traction-type driving members and passed between a row of printing hammers and a character support travelling in front of the latter. It has elements for gripping the paper inside the traction members (11) and near the line along which the hammers strike, typically in the form of electromagnets. The traction members can comprise spikes engaging in perforations in the paper. The electromagnet can comprise a fixed body fitting in a first shoe on one side of the paper, there being a slot in the shoe through which the spikes travel, and a blade sliding freely in the second shoe on the other side.
