Impermeable sheet is made by laminating >=1 layer of impermeable film (I) between layers of resin-impregnated fibrous sheet, where (I) has a lower tensile elastic modulus than the composite sheet. The fibrous sheets are pref. based on C, glass, boron, or metallic filaments impregnated with epoxy or polyester resin. (I) is pref. polymeric esp. of polyester film emtallised on both faces with e.g. Al, or of polyimide film. Process is esp. suitable for making a sheet which can be mfd., e.g. by winding on a mandrel and heat curing, to make strong, lightweight, thermally insulating structures such as necks or bodies for cryogenic reservoirs, deep sea containers, super conductor loops etc. Prods. possess a better combination of properties and/or tear or delamination resistance than conventional metal or glass-filled epoxy resin structures.
|
