The device consists of at least one heatable working roll (1). Each of the working rolls (1) is partially surrounded by a firmly fixed, also heatable shell (2) in such a manner that a tapering gap is formed between the roll (1) and shell (2). To achieve a uniform mixing and guidance of the material so as to achieve a homogeneous product quality, the working roll surface is roughened and the inner surface of the shell (2) facing the roughened working roll surface has, in sequence, a smooth feed zone (4), a roughened mixing zone (6) and a smooth flattening zone (7), each zone extending over the entire shell width. <IMAGE>
