1505010 Coated optical elements AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 7 May 1976 [19 May 1975] 18954/76 Heading B2E [Also in Division G2] A optical element is formed of an organic or inorganic material and has on at least one surface a transparent coating of polyvinyl alcohol which has been cross-linked with a combination of zirconium nitrate and formaldehyde to form an abrasion- and fogging- resistant coating. Preferably the surface has a pre-treatment which may be a hydrolytic surface treatment such as contact with an aqueous solution of a caustic alkali such as sodium hydroxide. The optical element may be of glass, plastics or metal. Preferably the plastics is a polycarbonate such as poly(allyl diglycol carbonate) and poly-(4, 4'-dioxydiphenyl-2, 2'-propane carbonate) suitable optical elements are windows, spectacles, goggles, face shields, binoculars and optical instruments. |
