1504783 I C engine combustion chambers in pistons TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 14 Oct 1975 [15 Nov 1974] 41914/75 Heading FIB A piston for an I.C. engine has a main cavity 38 opening from the face 24 thereof which in use bounds a combustion chamber, there also being provided in the piston a recess (47) Fig. 8 (not shown) or recesses 41 - 43 for receiving gaseous flow from the main cavity 38 during operation of the engine. Combustion is started in the main cavity by a spark-plug 37 and as the piston moves away from top dead centre the burning gases spread to the recesses 41 - 43. The recesses may be formed as part circles, Fig. 5 (not shown) or a single recess (47) may surround the main cavity (46) Fig. 7 (not shown), in each case the radially inner wall surface 44 of one recess being sloping and the radially outer wall surface being parallel to the piston axis.
