1504272 Manufacturing electrochemical cell block STAMICARBON BV 6 Aug 1976 [14 Aug 1975] 32888/76 Heading H1B An electrochemical cell is made by feeding one or more fibrous webs 6, 7 of curable polymeric material for forming spacers through a forming station 10, 11 at which openings having the required internal frame dimensions are formed at successive positions along the or each web, conducting the formed web to a combining station 12, 13 at which it contacts at least one web of material for forming cell partitioning sheets and is caused to adhere to it by heating to a temperature at which the polymeric material has some tack but is not cured, e.g. 80‹ C., the combined webs are then cut transversely at 14 into sections comprising at least one frame shaped section of curable polymeric material adhered to at least one cell partitioning sheet, two or more sections being brought together to form a stack with the intervention between juxtaposed sections of core elements 18, the assembly being subjected to a curing operation under pressure to cure the polymeric material and cause integration of the polymeric frame shaped sheets into a monolithic structure, the core elements are then removed to provide fluid passageways leading from the periphery of the block to the cells. The curable polymeric material forming the frames may be polyester, epoxy resin, polyvinyl ester, polyacrylate and may be reinforced with glass, asbestos, inorganic, polyester or polyamide fibres or may consist of nylon. The cell partition material may be an electrode material, ion exchange material or semi-permeable membrane. The resultant cell block may be used as a fuel cell battery, Fig. 5, with fuel electrodes 60, 66, electrolyte chambers 61, 65, 69, oxygen electrode 62, 64, oxygen chamber 63, fuel chamber 67, fuel electrode 68, electrolyte chamber 70, electrolyte passage 71, oxygen channel 72, fuel chamber 73 and sealing film 74 or may be used for electro-dialysis or ion exchange processes. |
