The heat retaining means for bath tubs comprises a heat-insulated downflow pipe (3) which is attached to the hot water tap by a rubber connecting sleeve (4) and leads down into the bath through an opening in a glass wool mat (5) which is placed in the bath tub. The glass wool mat (5) which is encased in a water-tight plastics foil (6) is raised up by means of floats (7) once the hot water flows in so that the surface level of the hot water is covered by the mat thereby preventing heat loss. In this way much less but other water can be used.
