Safety guard for shaft-driven press has a dynamo connected to the press shaft. When the guard (2) is closed a spring loaded latch (9) on the guard snaps under a first locking plate (12) secured to an armature shaft of a torque relay (10). When on actuation of the press clutch, the press shaft begins to rotate, the dynamo eneergises the relay to turn the armature shaft and so introduce a second locking plate (13), over the latch. When the press shaft stops at the end of the press cycle the spring-actuated return of the armature shaft frees the latch.
