PURPOSE:To selectively produce an aldehyde in high yield and purity, with easy operation and inexpensive apparatus, by using a specific alcohol as a raw material and partially oxidizing the alcohol with a solid bromous acid salt in the presence of a catalyst such as Al2O3. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic alcohol of formula RCH2OH (R is phenyl, p- methylphenyl, p-chlorophenyl or p-nitrophenyl) (e.g. benzyl alcohol) is made to react with an oxidizing agent comprising a solid bromous acid salt (e.g. solid sodium bromite) in an inert gas atmosphere (e.g. argon gas) in a water- insoluble inert organic solvent (e.g. methylene chloride) in the presence of a catalyst (Al2O3 or silica gel) at room temperature, the obtained solid component is separated from the organic solvent by filtration and the solvent is distilled out under reduced pressure to recover the reaction product at a purity of as high as >=95%. A high-purity aldehyde such as benzaldehyde can be produced only by simple distillation by the proper selection of the organic solvent. |
