The bench vice has a movable jaw supported on a base rail which is formed whith rack teeth. A fixed jaw is mounted astride the rail. A locking device is attached to the fixed jaw and includes a screw element around which is a nut, the later being formed with locking teeth engageable with those in the rack. The teeth on the nut pref. extend over only a portion of its periphery, the rest of the periphery being smooth and dimensioned so as not to interfere with the rack teeth.
