Valve for use in water softening plant - has bypass with flow rate adjustable by screw to allow passage of test sample

The valve (12) for use with water softening plant is generally of conventional design with a central passage-way (9), a seat (8) and a valve head (10). There is in addition a by-pass (16) in the wall (11) dividing the inlet from the outlet. The flow through the by-pass can be adjusted by the screw (19) which is screwed into the boss (17) in the body (15). This adjustment is used to give a measured flow when the main valve (10) is closed in order to measure the hardness of the water flowing out of the water softening plant. The principle can be embodied in a multi-way valve which reduces the number of valves in the pipes connecting the supply pipe to the water softener.
