A bearing, support or seal element comprises three layers. The layers are made of materials having different coefficients of expansion to allow high temperature variations while compensating for the expansion differences. The element may be an axial thrust ring made of a material of relatively low coefficient expansion e.g. electrographite. The ring is supported by a housing (2) of a material having a lower coefficient, e.g. brass. Between the bearing and the housing is arranged a ring of a material whose coefficient is substantially higher than that of the other two materials, e.t. lead.
