Prior to the finish-grinding in size-controlled grinding operations, workpieces and grinding machine are often relieved of pressure by briefly lifting the grinding wheel away from the workpiece. The grinding wheel is then fed once again at a very low rate which corresponds to the finish-grinding, as a result of which the machining time is substantially lengthened. In order to shorten this time, the invention proposes to carry out the renewed feed of the grinding wheel at a relatively high rate and only to change over to a low rate corresponding to the finish-grinding when the grinding wheel makes contact with the workpiece. The control device used for this purpose comprises a supplementary device to establish the point at which the grinding wheel makes contact with the workpiece, this emitting a corresponding signal to change over the rate of feed.
