1387335 Solid phase preparation of polyesters IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 July 1973 [21 July 1972 14 Nov 1972] 34202/72 and 52551/72 Heading C3R A process for preparing a polyester comprises reacting an aromatic dicarboxylic acid in the solid state with an ester-forming derivative of a diol having no free hydroxyl groups, the reaction conditions being controlled so that throughout the reaction a major part of the reaction mass forms a solid phase. The reaction may be carried out under fluidized bed conditions with the diacid in particulate form and the esterforming derivative in the vapour state, preferably in a chemically inert carrier gas, e.g. nitrogen. When ethylene oxide is used as the esterforming derivative or basic compound catalyst, e.g. 2-hydroxyethyl trimethylammonium hydroxide, triphenyl phosphine or a polyamide, may be present. The examples describe reacting ethylene oxide with terephthalic acid, 1,2-bis- (4 - carboxyphenoxy) - ethane, naphthalene- 2,6-dicarboxylic acid, biphenyl-4,41-dicarboxylic acid or sulphonyl-4,41-dibenzoic acid. The following are also described: (a) reaction of ethylene oxide with naphthalene - 2,7 - dicarboxylic acid, 1,4-diphenoxybutane-p,p1-dicarboxylic acid, bibenzyl-4,41-dicarboxylic acid, stilbene-4,41-dicarboxylic acid, 1,2-di-p-carboxybenzoyloxyethane or 1,6-di-p-carboxy-benzamido hexane, and (b) reaction of oxetane and 3,3 - dimethyloxetane with biphenyl - 4,41- dicarboxylic acid and diphenyl sulphone-4,41- dicarboxylic acid.
