[26 June 1973] 24852/74 Heading F2G A hand tool for assembling a flanged first tubular member on to a flanged second tubular member comprises two jaws 24, 28 mounted on handles 26, 30 so as to be movable towards and away from each other by actuation of a lever 72, each jaw having disposed thereon a semicircular rib 48 and a pair of ear-shaped inserts 50 having curved edges 58 to complement the associated rib 48, the inserts 50 being pivotally mounted on pins 52 on the jaws, so as to allow insertion of the flanged tubular members into the jaws, the inserts 50 then being urged by springs (not shown) back to the positions shown in Fig. 1, whereby the flanges of the tubular member can be engaged by the ribs 48 and the edges 58 of the inserts 50 during assembly of the member. Fig. 6 illustrates a connection with which the hand tool is used and which connects two flexible pipes 80. A completed joint is shown in Fig. 6 between the left hand pipe 80 and the body 82 of the connector and comprises an insert 90 in the pipe 80 which is itself pushed into a bore 96 in an extension 88 of the body 82, a flanged ferrule 92 then being pushed over the extension 88 by use of the tool to secure the pipe 80 in place. The tool is shown in the right hand side of Fig. 6 prior to assembly of the ferrule 92, the jaws of the tool engaging a flange 86 on the body 82 and the flange 94 of the ferrule and upon actuation draining the ferrule on to the right hand extension 88 of the body 82. |
