In an apparatus for the treatment of dirty water by bacterial action, a cylindrical vat lies on a base section in the form of an inverted truncated cone. An interior wall divides off a peripheral zone from which the treated effluent is removed. A central chimney is provided for oxygenation. The peripheral zone is connected to the interior of the dividing wall at the base of the vat by means of conduits of small section.
