The liquid film may be on a surface or a thread and its resistance is measured between electrodes projecting into it. The gas component is preferably carbon dioxide and the liquid a solution of barium hydroxide and lithium carbonate. The apparatus shown comprises a measuring chamber 1 and sampling cell 2 which are separable. The liquid 15 is stored in chamber 1 and is forced by air-pressure from bulb 12 through the hole into measuring chamber 3 and contacts electrodes 9, 10. When the air-pressure is released, a film of liquid remains on the walls of chamber 3. The sampling cell 2 has a member 6 which rotates from the closed position shown to the position used for sampling and measurement where cavity 4 is adjacent port 5.
