Aromatic esters and alcohols are prepared by oxidizing an aromatic compound substituted with at least one methyl group in the liquid phase with a molecular oxygen-containing gas under super-atmospheric pressure, at a temperature of from 140‹ to 240‹ C. in the presence of an esterifying agent and hydrolysing the ester thus formed to obtain the alcohol, if desired. Examples describe: (1) the preparation of benzyl alcohol by the hydrolysis of benzyl acetate itself obtained by the oxidation of toluene in the presence of acetic anhydride or of acetyl chloride; (2) the preparation of p-methyl benzyl alcohol by the hydrolysis of p-methyl benzyl acetate itself obtained by the oxidation of p-xylene in the presence of acetic anhydride; (3) the preparation of p-tert. butyl benzyl alcohol by the oxidation of p-tert. butyl toluene in the presence of acetic anhydride, followed by hydrolysis of the product reaction mixture; (4) the preparation of 3,5-dimethyl benzyl alcohol from mesitylene; (5) the preparation of p-xylylene glycol from p-methylbenzyl acetate. |
