The mechanism pre-loads a clamping roller against a roll of paper, so as to press it against one or more drums. A first adjustable control unit regulates the maximum force exerted by the clamping roller (5) on the paper roll (1), and there is a detector for the roll diameter. This is connected to the control unit, so that the pressure exerted varies with the roll diameter. A second adjustable control unit is also connected between detector and first unit, controlling the ratio between the clamping force and the roll diameter. Pressure can be exerted by compressed air via a ram, pressing the clamping roller towards the drums (2, 3) or moving it away from them.
