There is disclosed a desolventizer-toaster having means for admitting sparge steam and shaft means on which sweeps or agitating arms are mounted for agitating the contents. The means for admitting sparge steam may be via sparger elements mounted in the agitating arms or via holes in one or more of the trays of the desolventizer toaster. The shaft is rotatably driven by a steam turbine with sparge steam requirements for the desolventizer toaster provided, in part, by low pressure steam withdrawn from the turbine.
