The cable or pipe (1) is suspended from the float by a number of equally spaced straps (5). The flat (2) consists of a number of cylindrical pipes connected in series and divided by equally spaced partitions, (7a). Each section of the float is fitted with a vertical pipe (9) which protrudes from the bottom of the float and connects the inside of the float with the sea water. The float is filled with a liquid lighter than water such as a hydrocarbon. At great sea bed depths the internal pressure of the float increases and the differential pressure across the float remains small.
