1496668 Seals W S SHAMBAN & CO 18 Dec 1974 [26 Dec 1973] 54664/74 Heading F2B A P.T.F.E. or like seal ring 31 responds to the deformation of an elastomeric 0-ring 33, under increasing fluid pressure P, to modify its sealing contact with surface 29, from line contact 57, in Fig. 2 to areal contact in Fig. 3. Even when P = 0, the 0-ring 33 is not unstressed, in Fig. 2, as the elastic force F s tilts the ring 31 about the contact line 57. In the absence of any elastic force, ring 31 would assume the areal contact position of Fig. 3.
