A rocking fermenter consists of a cylindrical housing having a flanged cover and a mixing device movably attached to the cover. The housing is rotatably mounted in a frame and attached via lever rods to a drive mechanism. Pref. the mixer, esp. of the cross-bar type, is attached via a flexible pipe to a connecting tube passing through the lid. Used esp. for growing viruses and mammalian cells in suspension cultures. In an example, MKS vines was grown on baby hamster kidney cells for vaccine prodn. The need for a stuffing box is avoided.
