METHOD OF XYLENES IZOMERIZING

1444481 Isomerizing xylenes MOBIL OIL CORP 17 July 1974 [13 Sept 1973 (2)] 31662/74 Heading C5E C 8 aromatic mixtures are contacted with zeolites ZSM-5, 8, 11, 12 or 21 in the vapour phase at 500-1000‹ F. to isomerize the xylenes and convert at least some of the ethylbenzene in in the feed either to xylenes or to compounds readily separable by distillation from C 8 aromatics. The reaction may be in the presence of added H 2 or in the absence of added H 2 in which case the zeolite should be at least partly in the acid form. The zeolite may be composited with alumina, and may include a metal of Group VIII (e.g. Ni) introduced by base exchange or impregnation.
