As stitched fabric passes from a sewing machine, it is drawn out and laid flat, with successive stitched fabrics forming a stack. While the fabric is drawn along a horizontal plane above the supporting table the fabric transfer unit also moves horizontally. When the material has been laid, it moves vertically, travels to the start position and then reassures its horizontal orientation. The design allows wide fabrics to be stacked and the transfer unit to be returned to the start position without interfering with the prepn. of the next material length to be handled.
