The microwave search-and-rescue beacon system comprises micro-miniaturised radio transmitters and receivers to aid location of climbers and skiers esp. in the event of avalanches. Each climber or skier carries a miniaturised microwave transmitter attached to his person. The transmitter is constructed using micro-strip techniques, making it easy to mfr. in large quantities. It is powered by a small, long-life battery but is only switched on in emergency either by automatic means (accelerometer, position sensor etc.) or by hand. One member of a party can also carry a microwave receiver with directional antenna incorporated in a ski stick or axe handle.
