The needle (5) has sharp point, and a number of excitation core needles (15, 25) with sharp points is provided. The excitation cores are arranged in circles around the test core (5). A first winding (6) is wound on the needle (5) and can be connected to an AC voltage source for detection of material thickness or of faults in the material. One or several second windings (16, 26) are wound on the other side of excitation needles for connection to a DC voltage source and generation or eddy currents in the tested material, or for its magnetisation. Two or more cylindrical or tubular elements are provided. They have a central hole (9) and a number of slots on their periphery, cut in the direction to the central hole.
