The electromagnetic scanner for data decoding equipment is suitable for the simultaneous reading of embedded element and magnetic strip type of coded data. The reading heads in the scanner consists of miniature inductive pot cores (5) arranged in line across the width of the scanned area. For synchronisation purposes, one of the heads may be offset from the others (6). Each inductor is energised from an oscillator running at 1000-400 kHz. The damping effect of the embedded metal elements in the encoded card etc. is detected and amplified. A Schmitt trigger circuit produces the pulse output required for the digital decoding circuits. A standard read/write head, offset from the other ones may be used to decode magnetically encoded data on the same card.
