Special coke for making refractory carbon blocks is produced by milling a mixt. of anthracite, coking coal and coal tar pitch or petroleum bitumen, adjusting the water content of 8-12%, compressing to 0.9-1.2 t/m3 and coking with hot flue temp. of at least 1300 degrees C. Used as linings for blast or electric furnaces, electrochemical or electromettalurgical plant used at over 2000 degrees C. The coke has a low volatile content and does not require further calcining before addn. of binder and forming into blocks.
