The power driven ratchet spanner has a lever (16) with a circular end (15) housing a ratchet wheel (12). The ratchet wheel (12) is attached by splines (11) to a disc (10) which is provided with a hexagonal hole to suit the nut or bolt head. A cylindrical hole in the side of the lever (16) houses a pawl 18) with two teeth (19) (20). The teeth (19) (20) are separated by a slit (21) which provides a small degree of resilience in the teeth and ensures that the load is shared equally between the teeth. A spring (23) fitted inside the pawl keeps it pressed against the teeth (13) of the ratchet. The lever (16) is oscillated by the rod (24) which is attached to a hydraulic cylinder or similar source of power.
