1493783 High temperature cells ESB Inc 28 May 1976 [9 June 1975] 22204/76 Heading H1B A secondary battery comprises in the charged state a molten sodium negative reactant, a positive reactant comprising an aluminium halide and molten sulphur, a solid member separating the negative and positive reactants and being selectively ionically conductive to sodium cations, with a molten sodium haloaluminate (as defined) electrolyte on the positive reactant side of the solid member, and in which the aluminium halide is at least partially soluble, and a current collector disposed in each of the positive and negative reactants. The sodium haloaluminates are those formed from the chlorides, bromides, fluorides or iodides of sodium and of Al. The cell may operate in the range 150‹ to 225‹ C. and have a glass or #-alumina solid electrolyte. |
