The function may be changed by adjusting the apparatus or by adding another independent variable to it. In Figs. 2, 3 (not shown) possible mobile arrangements and shapes of permanent or electro-magnets (2) and ferrite members (6) modifying the magnetic fields are illustrated in relationship to a Hall generator (1) to produce different functions of a variable. In Fig. 4 the Hall generator 1 comprises a platelet 8 embedded in a ferrite block 7, and a supply current thro' 12 and 13 proportional.to say the r.p.m. of a machine provides a current to the terminals 9, 10 proportioned to itself and the field strength of a magnet 20 shielded by a ferrite plate 15 and mounted on a guide 16 which may move with a regulating rod of a motor vehicle fuel injection pump (not shown). When further factors such as speed or temperature of the engine affect the engine control, the function f(a) can be either added to or multiplied by a value which is for example a function of the speed. Addition may be carried out by means of known equipment such as a resistance network, amplifier or the like. The displacement of 16 is indicated by a pointer 17 and an amplifier 21 may connect thro' a lead 22 to an actual value/desired value comparator forming part of a controller Fig. 5 (not shown) see also Division G3.
