Equipment for purifying effluent by the activated sludge process includes units for pretreating the water, a round aeration basin aerated by gas jets, a settling basin with a scraper and a unit for working the sludge. The basin is formed by a dam with the ground inside it removed. The bottom is not necessarily connected to the walls. The pretreatment includes screening to remove large solids and a disintegrator (comminuting pump). The air jets stir the liq. in the aeration basin, producing a circular motion. Heavy material collected near the centre to remove batchwise or continuously. A virtually horizontal channel connects the top of the aeration basin and a distributor in the centre of the settler. The channel is above the scraper. Sludge is removed continuously. A lagoon forms a buffer store for sludge. The equipment is bounded by two parallel lines. These correspond to the greatest dimension of the equipment. Their length is determined by greatest dimension of the largest unit on one hand and the sum of the smallest dimension of the largest unit and the greatest dimension of any other on the other hand. Design ensures minimisation of plant area.
|
