The underfloor heating system which may be heated by an electrical heating element (11) or by pipes which circulate a heating medium, uses inserts or material embedded in the floor material (1) in order to distribute the heat more efficiently and evenly. The floor material is mounted on an insulation layer (8) on which the heating element or coil rests. The inserts may be a corrugated metal grid (12) which almosts occupies the whole depth of the floor. Alternatively, it may be a granular substance. In a further design, it may consist of set of short length top hat shaped metal sheets, with the flanges flush with the floor surface, and the bases resting on the heating coil. These can be distributed in a pattern throughout the floor.
